Shortly after we brought my newborn daughter home we ended up back at the hospital to treat her for possible meningitis. We chose to go to Duke because it was the "best." They aren't. Not only were the doctors arrogant and unprofessional but after the IV that the ER put in failed after three days (not unusual) it took them three tries to put in a PICC (peripherally inserted central catheter) line.
The first one clotted (also not unusual but we are pretty sure the nurse forgot to put in heparin, an anti-clotting medicine), the second one was accidentally pulled out by one of the nurses. Not only did they not apologize they charged us to have the third one put in. It also took them over twenty four hours to have someone come put in another line both times causing our less than month old daughter to have over 14 more shots during that time. In total, our daughter was stuck over forty times including seven attempts at a spinal tapp.
Additionally, I requested to speak with a specialist about my daughter's condition and we did. When he stopped by twice more to "see how things were going" during our stay I thought he was being nice. I was charged for three consultations.
My aunt is a nurse in Baltimore and when she would tell her friends what was happening to us they would ask why we didn't take her to Duke... DON'T make the same mistake we did. Take your babies somewhere else!
I noticed that Duke is one of only two hospitals to get named on U.S. News & World Report's Honor Roll for its 21 Best Hospitals and won the Everest Award, given to Thomson Reuters' top 25 hospitals. Only one other hospital, Vanderbilt, achieved this distinction!
Our 26 week old premature baby was in the NICU at Duke. I can not explain how good these people are. The whole NICU team was just top notch. My son made it home after 2 months and during those two months the whole staff was supportive, available, understanding and wonderful. I can not imagine a better NICU- they are famous for a reason!
