SNAPSHOT
From the 1889 opening of The Johns Hopkins Hospital, to the opening of the School of Medicine four years later, there emerged the concept of combining research, teaching and patient care. This model, the first of its kind, would lead to a national and international reputation for excellence and discovery. Today, Johns Hopkins uses one overarching name—Johns Hopkins Medicine—to identify its entire medical enterprise. This $5 billion system unites the physicians and scientists of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

If you want the best then choose Johns Hopkins. My experience here has always been great.
I agree with other reviwers that the cost of care is very high at this hospital but what price is there for the best care? I had amazing treatment at Johns Hopkins and I would not have got the same level of expertise back home in Germany.
The international office here is very money oriented- I understand as an international patient you have to pay- but having an international insurance meant that some of the bills my insurance would cover- regardless they made me pay upfront and before I even set foot in any doctors office. The area where the hospital is located is very dangerous- a researcher from one of the labs was killed while I was there. You literally can not walk more than 2 blocks away from the hospital without risking your life. If you are an international patient you may want to go to other hospitals which are just as good but in better areas- Mayo Clinic or on of the Harvard hospitals in Boston come to mind. Baltimore is not where you want to be!
I was covered by insurance so decided to get operated on here because it has such a great reputation (and I live nearby). I was extremely happy about the care provided but when the final bill came in, I could not believe how expensive it was. I am not sure how anyone could afford it if they werent covered.
I had a broken orbit bone and the eye and muscle sank under my lid and I was told there was a high chance that I would never be able to have normal eye function again....my doctor did an amazing job u couldn't tell the axident ever even happened
My 24 month old son was seen in the Hopkins pediatric ENT clinic by Dr. Niparko who also placed bilateral tubes in his ears as an outpatient procedure. The experience as a whole was quite satisfactory and Dr. Niparko professional in his manner. My only critic would be that I never saw him look into my sons ears- not before or after the surgery ( in the 2 week follow up appointment). His fellows were the ones doing the ear exam- not good enough for my standards- I expect the ENT physician to examine my son- as well as his fellows. Hope this helps.
I had to go to the Johns Hopkins ER after being in a car accident while being pregnant. I had severe pelvic pain- I was seen by a family physician resident- never by an OB attending or any attending ( ER or else) at all. The technician who did my ultrasound verbally expressed she did not know what a subchorionic hematoma looked like ( problem I had)....and a radiologist never came in to see the exam or calm me down after such a bad tech. I was discharged 6 hours later without ever having seen a board certified physician- then came the bill $2500. I would not go back to this ER.
I was seen on two occasions in the OB clinic by Dr. Gurwitz. I found the system to be inefficient ( you are seen by her nurse for over an hour before you have your first appt at a cost of $400) and the service to be poor. Dr. Gurwitz came in with a bored looking medical student who did not inroduce himself ( and no one else introduced..) and in very unprofessional atttire; wearing flipflops!
She did not examine me- actually did not lay a finger on me, was in a hurry and not cordial at all. I would not reccomend this physician or clinic to anyone. Definitely not what I expected a Hopkins- I changed OB. Hope this is helpful for others.
After much discussion it was agreed we could proceed as plannned with a major upfront payment.
The actual exam was completed with great courtesy by the Internist and a number of test made. However, we were both of the view that the whole procedure was less thorough and far less transparent than similar checks we had had in previous years in the UK under the BUPA system.
