The world's oldest and largest private cancer center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) has devoted more than a century to patient care as well as to innovative research, making significant contributions to new and better therapies for the treatment of cancer.
Founded in 1884 as the New York Cancer Hospital by a group that included John J. Astor and his wife, Charlotte, the original building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan began its move to its present location on York Avenue in 1936 when John D. Rockefeller, Jr. donated the land upon which, in 1939, Memorial Hospital was constructed. Between 1970 and 1973, a new Memorial Hospital was constructed and this building stands on the site today.
In the 1940s, two former General Motors executives, Alfred P. Sloan and Charles F. Kettering, joined forces to establish the Sloan-Kettering Institute (SKI). SKI has since become one of the nation's premier biomedical research institutions. Built adjacent to Memorial Hospital, SKI was formally dedicated in 1948. In 1960, SKI and Memorial Hospital were unified into a single entity, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Today, the Center has more than 10,000 employees including 727 Memorial Hospital attending staff and 133 SKI members. In 2008, more than 22,000 patients were admitted to Memorial Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering accommodated 466,000 outpatient visits at its Manhattan and regional sites combined.

My grandmother was treated here and received amazing care - thank you!
I was part of a program for woman at high risk for breast cancer. Due to the diligence of the doctor in charge of the program, my cancer was discovered at an early stage. Due to the nature of the tumor (non hormone related) chemo and radiation over a period of ten months was added to my program after surgery (both a lumpectomy and a sentinel node biopsy). I was away from home during the ten months period. Sloan-Kettering staff saw me as a person, not a patient. I was a whole person who was on the road to recovery. Social workers, phycologist, yoga classes, art therapy classes were just some of the wonderful holistic inclusions to my recovery process. The building was clean and happily decorated (the breast center now has a brand new building, even better), the staff, from physicians, nurses, assistants, administrative and cleaning staff were friendly, smiling, outgoing people, always ready to lend a hand. I continued to see my doctors first twice a year, then once a year, and now I visit annually (it has been 10 years) for a mammograph and an appointment with a nurse practitioner. I hope to never need Sloan Kettering more treatment again, but if I have to face a cure for cancer again in my life, I will not think twice about which hospital for my cure. Memorial Sloan-Kettering gave me back my life.
