Due to a cervical spinal injury from earlier in the year, throughout 2014 I have seen an ungodly number of hospitals. Hopefully my recent stay at Barnes-Jewish will be the end of that, and if so I'll be... more ending on a high note. Every interaction I had was just fantastic.
Specifically, I was seeing Dr Riew at the Cervical Spine Clinic, part of the Center for Advanced Medicine. Both he and his office staff were incredibly communicative and thorough, and I felt at ease for what I considered a pretty risky procedure. Sure, they said it was relatively common and low-risk, but when it's your spine they're cutting into, it's risky. They put me as at ease as possible, no small task. Special shout-outs to his nurse Barbra, who was an invaluable resource throughout the entire process.
Leading up to the surgery, I had a number of appointments throughout the hospital, and everybody was kind, thorough and (in hospital terms) prompt. Just a pleasant experience, going through all of the necessary steps.
Communication and compassion are themes that continued through my surgery and recovery. The various nurses, the anesthesiologist and the surgeon himself all made sure to communicate with me and my family before the surgery and while I was terrified, I knew I was in capable hands.
Upon waking up in the recovery area, I was wheeled to a private room where my family was already waiting. Things here are understandably foggy, but my nurse (I think her name is Joann?) was just the best at managing my condition and keeping my comfortable. Between Joann's care and that handy push-button machine full of Dilaudid, I was ok as could be expected.
Upon my return home the hospital has called to make sure I'm doing well AND I got a thank you card! Hospitals that send thank you cards? That's just crazy!
So nobody in their right mind wants to have surgery, but when I think back to some of the more questionable hospital experiences I've had over the year, I thank my lucky stars that I was able to receive my care at Barnes-Jewish. I would recommend this hospital to everybody. Author: Matt E./ source: http://www.yelp.com/biz/barnes-jewish-hospital-saint-louis-9
